1. Photosynthesis

plant_energy_conversion
Photosynthesis

In the previous modules, we’ve looked at how cells use cellular respiration to break down carbohydrates (like glucose) to create ATP. But where does the carbohydrate come from?

Carbohydrates are made by plants (and a few other kinds of organisms) through photosynthesis. Photosynthesis means “making with light.” During photosynthesis, plants take in carbon dioxide from the air, water from the soil, and use it to produce carbohydrates. Oxygen is released as a by-product.

Chloroplasts (the green spheres), surrounded by the plant cell wall.

Within a plant, the reaction primarily occurs within leaves. In the leaves are cells that are packed with chloroplasts.

Chloroplasts are where photosynthesis actually occurs.

Chloroplasts are the photosynthesizing organelle

The equation for photosynthesis is

6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy ? C6H12O6 + 6O2.

(carbon dioxide + water + light energy ? glucose and oxygen)

Note that this is the complement of what happens during cellular respiration.

    • Photosynthesis: 6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy ? C6H12O6 + 6O2
    • Respiration: C6H12O6 + 6O2 ?  energy(ATP) + 6CO2 + 6H2O

4. Why Photosynthesis is important: food, carbon fixation, and oxygen

All food can be traced to photosynthesis

Here are there reasons why you should care about photosynthesis

  1. Food: The food we eat comes to us from photosynthesis, either directly (if we eat a plant) or indirectly (if we eat an animal that eats a plant).
  1. Carbon fixation: Photosynthesis takes a gas, carbon dioxide, and makes it into a solid, carbohydrate. This is called carbon fixation. Since we are what we eat, that means that the atoms that make up our body were all, at some point, carbohydrates in plants, produced through photosynthesis. Look at your hand and think about that: all of those atoms were once in a plant. At some point, every carbon atom that’s in your body was once a carbon dioxide molecule floating in the air. Look at your hand again, and think about that: all of those carbon atoms were once carbon dioxide gas molecules floating around in the air.
  2. Earth’s atmosphere has oxygen because of photosynthesis

Oxygen: The early Earth had a different atmosphere than the atmosphere we have today: it was oxygen-free. Now, Earth’s atmosphere is about 21% oxygen. This oxygen was put there by photosynthesizing bacteria. Think about that the next time you take a breath. That oxygen you’re taking in is only there because of photosynthesis.

7. Checking Understanding: Photosynthesis

Got it? In this module, we’ve reviewed

  1. The overall reaction for photosynthesis
  2. Where photosynthesis occurs (in plants, in leave, in chloroplasts)
  3. The notion of carbon fixation
  4. The importance of photosynthesis (producing food and oxygen).
  5. The reciprocal nature of the photosynthesis and respiration.

If you’re confident that you understand this well, take this quiz. While it mostly involves photosynthesis, it also includes other energy related topics (cellular respiration, aerobic v. anaerobic respiration), both as a means of improving your understanding of photosynthesis, and helping you to consolidate your memories of those topics.
