High School Biology

There’s a lot of overlap between what’s below and my AP Biology curriculum. Over time, though, this will become more of an NGSS Biology curriculum.

  1. Scientific Method (What science is, and isn’t; Scientific Method and Controlled Experiments; Theory v. Hypothesis)

  2. Biology—Core Concepts (Properties of living things, Structure and Function, Levels of Biological Organization)

  3. Basic Chemistry for Biology Students (a basic overview of atomic structure, The Octet Rule, ionic bonds, covalent bonds)

  4. The Chemistry and Properties of Water (How water’s polar nature and hydrogen bonding affect water’s properties; a virtual lab comparing water and rubbing alcohol (more tutorials coming soon)

  5. Basic Biochemistry (Monomers v. polymers, the basics of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, all at a high school level)

  6. Enzymes: An introduction to key principles and terms related to enzymes. Includes flashcards and quizzes.

  7. Cell Size, Surface area and VolumeA video explaining one of the core processes in biology, followed by an interactive tutorial.

  8. Cells and Organelles: interactive lyrics, tutorials, quizzes, and flashcards about animal and plant cells.

  9. Cell Membranes: tutorials, flashcards and quizzes about the phospholipid bilayer, membrane structure, and membrane transport.

  10. Osmosistutorials, interactive diagrams, and quizzes.

  11. Energy Overview (A High School Level look at ATP, Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis)

  12. Cellular Respiration: Interactive Lyrics, Diagrams, and Flashcards about Glycolysis, the Krebs Cycle, and the Electron Transport Chain.

  13. Photosynthesis. The Light Reactions (3 parts: Interactive Lyrics, Diagrams and Flashcards)

  14. Molecular Genetics Main Menu (a high school to college level introduction to DNA, Replication, Transcription, the Genetic Code, and Protein Synthesis)

  15. (I’m a) Virus. Interactive Lyrics.

  16. Mitosis: A series of four quizzes covering mitosis and cytokinesis

  17. Meiosis: Interactive lyrics, flashcards, and quizzes about meiosis

  18. Genetics (includes Mendelian genetics concepts , along with ABO blood type inheritance and Sex-linked alleles).

  19. Population Genetics Tutorials and Quizzes (Now in my AP Biology course)

  20. Ecology (The Carbon Cycle, Food Chains and Food Webs, Trophic Levels and Ecological Pyramids)

  21. Human Anatomy Main Menu: includes Heart Anatomy , Digestive System, Immune Systemand Respiratory System

Semester Reviews

  1. Berkeley High School Semester 1 final review materials: covers biochemistry, cell structure and function, cell membranes and transport, enzymes, DNA and molecular genetics
    1. Semester 1 Review Flashcards
    2. Semester 1 (Mostly) Visual Review Quizzes
